관악산

Gwanaksan · 632 m
⛰️ 632 m 🟡 Easy–Moderate ⏱ 3–5 hrs round-trip 🌸 Best: Spring / Autumn

The closest major mountain to COEX reachable by direct subway — no transfers. Multiple trailheads and well-maintained paths make this ideal for a first Korean hiking experience. The summit observatory (연주대) rewards with sweeping views of southern Seoul.

Recommended Routes

1
Seoul National University entrance (서울대입구역)Most popular · well-signed

Exit 3, walk ~15 min to the main trailhead. Wide, paved lower path transitions to rocky trail near the top. Passing through Gwanak Art Center area.

2
Sadang entrance (사당역)Shorter but steeper

Exit 5, follow the signs. ~2 hrs to summit. Popular with early morning regulars. Cafes at the base open from 6am.

Tips

🌅Start before 8am in summer — temperatures climb quickly after 10am.
👟Trail shoes recommended; the summit approach has loose granite steps.
💧Water fountains at both trailheads but scarce on the route — carry at least 1L.
🚇Direct from Samseong Station (Line 2) — no transfers. ~15–20 min.

응봉산

Eungbongsan · 94 m
⛰️ 94 m 🟢 Very Easy ⏱ ~30 min to summit 🌅 Best: Sunrise

Seoul's most accessible sunrise viewpoint. The short ascent is easy enough even in business casual shoes, and the octagonal pavilion (팔각정) at the top is a favourite for Han River panoramas. The entire mountain takes under an hour out-and-back — perfect before an early conference session.

The Route

1
Eungbong Station (응봉역, Gyeongui–Jungang Line)

Exit 1, turn left. The trailhead is immediately visible with stone steps leading uphill.

2
Summit pavilion (팔각정)

~20–30 min gentle climb. Octagonal pavilion at top — Han River visible in both directions, Achasan ridge to the east.

Tips

🌄Arrive 20 min before sunrise — the view over the Han River is stunning.
🧥Bring a light jacket; the hilltop can be breezy even in summer mornings.
📸The forsythia (개나리) festival in spring makes this especially photogenic in April.

아차산

Achasan · 287 m
⛰️ 287 m 🟢 Easy ⏱ 2–3 hrs round-trip 🌇 Best: Sunset

A ridgeline trail hugging the Han River with ancient Goguryeo fortress ruins (5th–7th century) along the way. Well-paved paths near the base make the lower section accessible to all fitness levels. Sunset from the ridge over the Han River valley is one of Seoul's best views.

The Route

1
Achasan Station (아차산역, Line 5)

Exit 2, walk straight ~10 min to the main entrance (아차산 입구). Trail map boards at the gate.

2
Fortress wall ridge (아차산성)

Follow the main trail uphill past restored fortress sections. The ridge runs north toward Yongmasan — easy extension if time allows.

3
Summit viewpoint

Han River visible to the south, Namsan Tower to the west. Return the same way or loop via the valley trail.

Tips

🌇Time your ascent to reach the ridge ~40 min before sunset.
🏰Look for the restored Goguryeo fortress wall sections along the ridge — they're genuinely ancient.
🔄The Achasan–Yongmasan ridge traverse is a popular 3-hour loop — worth it if you have time.

인왕산

Inwangsan · 338 m
⛰️ 338 m 🟡 Moderate ⏱ 2–3 hrs round-trip 🌃 Best: Evening

Famous for massive granite boulders, shamanic shrines (Inwang Seonang), and the Hanyangdoseong fortress wall that drapes across its ridgeline. Best experienced in the evening when the illuminated fortress wall creates a dramatic nightscape over central Seoul.

The Route

1
Gyeongbokgung Station (경복궁역, Line 3) — Exit 3

Walk ~20 min along Changuimun-ro toward the Changuimun Gate (창의문). Follow signs for 인왕산.

2
Hanyangdoseong wall trail (한양도성길)

Follow the restored 14th-century city wall uphill. Stone steps are steeper here than other mountains. The wall provides a natural handrail.

3
Summit (인왕산 정상, 338m)

360° views: Bugaksan to the north, Namsan to the south, Gyeongbokgung Palace below.

Tips

🌃Arrive 1 hr before sunset — the walk back down the lit fortress wall after dark is magical.
🌧️Avoid after rain — granite boulders become dangerously slippery when wet.
🛕Pass by Inwang Seonang shrine near the trailhead — an active shamanic worship site; be respectful.
🌙Open 24 hours for night hiking, but strictly closed on Mondays (or Tuesdays if Monday is a holiday). Entrance sometimes restricted after heavy rain.

북악산

Bugaksan · 342 m
⛰️ 342 m 🟡 Moderate ⏱ 2–3 hrs 🌿 Best: Clear days

The mountain directly behind Gyeongbokgung Palace, historically restricted as it overlooks the presidential residence (Cheongwadae). Now open to the public, it offers forested trails along ancient city walls — and a rare sense of total calm compared to Seoul's busier mountains.

🏷️ Access Pass: No ID or passport required! Just walk into the information center at the entrance and pick up a free numbered lanyard to wear while on the trail. The trail closes at sunset — plan your timing carefully.

The Route

1
Changuimun Gate (창의문)

From Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) Exit 3, take bus 1020, 7022, or 7212 to Changuimun Gate (~10 min). Pick up your free access lanyard at the entrance.

2
Baegakmaroo (백악마루, 342m summit)

Well-maintained forested trail with boardwalk sections. The fortress wall runs alongside most of the route.

3
Malbawi rest area (말바위) → exit via Sukjeongmun Gate

Descend east toward Samcheong Park. Bullets holes from the 1968 presidential palace raid are still visible on some trees — a sobering historical marker.

Tips

🕐Start no later than 2pm — checkpoint staff begin turning people away 1.5 hrs before sunset.
📷Photography near the Blue House area is restricted — follow the posted signs.
🌿One of the quietest trails in Seoul due to the controlled access — remarkably peaceful.

북한산

Bukhansan · 836 m
⛰️ 836 m 🔴 Moderate–Difficult ⏱ 4–6 hrs round-trip 🍂 Best: Autumn / Weekdays

A full national park on Seoul's doorstep, with dramatic granite peaks, ancient Buddhist temples, and one of the world's highest visitor densities per km² among national parks. The Baegundae peak scramble is bucket-list material — but even easy valley walks are deeply rewarding.

Route Options

1
Baegundae Peak (백운대, 836m) — Challenging

From Gupabal Station (Line 3), bus to Bukhansan National Park visitor center. ~3 hrs to summit including chain-assisted rock sections near the top. Breathtaking views.

2
Seunggasa Valley trail (승가사 계곡) — Easy

Gentle stream-side walk to Seunggasa Temple. Under 2 hrs round-trip. No technical sections — great for a relaxed morning. Cool shaded trail even in summer.

3
Ui-Sinseol Line + Dobongsan option

The Ui-Sinseol light rail line runs to the north of the park (Dobongsan area). Slightly different character — dramatic ridgeline with granite spires.

Tips

📅Go on a weekday — weekend crowds on the Baegundae trail can be genuinely dangerous near chains.
🥾Proper hiking shoes essential for Baegundae — the summit rock scramble requires grip.
🎒Bring 2L+ water and snacks — summit cafes charge premium prices and may be crowded.
🚌From Gupabal Station (Line 3), local buses 704/34 run to the park entrance — or take a taxi (~₩5,000).
⚠️Ranger-enforced descent deadline at sunset. Check the seasonal closing time posted at the entrance.
